Hi, please

A Week Without Google

For Next Week (Sep 23rd):

Experiment: A week without Google

In the coming week starting from the end of this class we will attempt to make it through a whole week without using any Google service. Not Google Search, not Gmail, not Google Talk, not Google Video, not Google Docs, not Google Maps, not Google Earth, not Google News, not Google Groups, not Youtube, not Google Video, not Blogger, not Picasa, not Google Calendar, not Google Checkout, not iGoogle, not Google Translate, tot Chrome browser, … you get the point.

It’s not going to be easy and hence we will not attempt to create an unfeasible challenge. We will keep a promise to each other to follow some rules:

  1. Whenever we are passively exposed to Google content (an embedded Google video, map, and so on…) we post that link to del.icio.us using the tags ‘nmrs08’, ‘weekwithoutgoogle’ and ‘ambushed’ (+whatever else you want to include)
  2. Whenever we break and use a Google service, we report about it to the blog, as a comment on this post.
  3. If we totally break altogether, we write a post about it as soon as we decide to pull out, summarizing the experience.

We will also try to support each other in the process by:

  1. If you use Gmail, please make sure to set a forward on your email to another email service (either on or offline). Please do that as the first thing you do after this class, and not later than 9pm.
  2. Every time you are about to use Google, and find a way around it, try to propose the alternative to the class by tagging the alternative with the tags ‘nmrs’, ‘weekwithoutgoogle’ and ‘dodged’.
  3. Share tactics on the blog. Work together to try to make it.

This is trust based only, but the student who will manage to take this challenge on and make it through the week will win the class’s medal of honor.

Good luck!
(we’re going to need it)

Ok, looking up some information for my comment to Josh’s post I accidentally Googled “Israel Median household income”. Argh… it’s only been a few hours…

OK, I do not think I’ll go through it without some more strict restrictions so I installed Leechblock for Firefox and have blocked Google domains. I have also switched the default search bar in my browser to something else than Google (currently Yahoo).

I recommend you do the same. Good luck!

Sorry guys, I had to use Google Docs for work! I’d explain to you what for, but it’s hopelessly boring and tedious. But I shouldn’t complain. At least I;m not shredding ten thousand documents BY HAND because the stupid shredder overheats every ten seconds like last week.

Yeah, I broke down and had to use Google image search to find a logo for a site I’m working on. I tried using Flickr and other stuff, but I couldn’t find anything good. Yahoo image search sucks a lot. I found what I wanted in less than a minute using Google.

Balls. I was doing so well too…Well, it’s only been a day, so I guess not.

Argh… I just realized I have been using Google News feeds through my RSS reader. It seems Google is jumping at me from every direction… (won’t do that again)

Sorry…I had to use Gmail for work. To spare you the details, I just needed to look through my inbox for information that turns out to be vital for the company.

    Whoops.

Broke once at work today as well…I had been mostly using yahoo and then, post lunch, after being a little tired I just googled away looking for news alerts. I didn’t even notice until a few minutes after. mannnnnn

So my friends were using Google to look up some story, and I looked on. So I indirectly broke my Google fast in the lamest way. But I’m not giving up!
