New Media is wealthier and more sophisticated than ever before. While some of the idealists dream about an Internet and media that are free from corporate control, it seems that the heralds of this New Media era are just as profit driven as the Old Media.
Check out photo’s of the Ritz Carlton, where this year’s WebbyConnect conference was held:

With Old Money enclaves hosting New Media conferences, it begs us to question how new this era really is.

I am a firm believer in the phrase, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” I think that this theory is certainly applicable to your post. I do not foresee any media, whether it be New or Old, that is not profit-driven simply in light of the way our society is structured as well as the nature of humans. This new media is not new in the topic of finances and profit about which you have written. It’s the new media due to its nuanced innovations and applications. My question is, will there ever be a time when the media is not profit-driven?
I think the idea of media being profit-driven is very specific to America. Other countries don’t have the problems we have because of we have a commercial media system. Take the BBC–it’s considered one of the best broadcasting companies in the world, and it’s state-funded.
