As our process becomes more self-directed, I do not have any specifics for you for next week but:
- Continue down the WP path:
- try to finish the main page
- Next go to post page (single.php) (+ if relevant: comments.php)
- Then to page page (page.php)
- Then to the menus (archive.php archives.php author.php category.php tag.ph)
- Then to search (search.php)
- Last (/optional): 404.php, attachment.php, image.php, links.php)
- Let’s get our heads into Indexhibit and how can we make it better:
- We’ll discuss it in class today
- Let’s share some findings from the Indexhibit forum that can shed some light on where to take this
- Let’s experiment with theming Indexhibit, it’s not hard, how can it be easier?
- Leonie will be back next week with a ‘Great Wide Open’ for us.
- Enjoy
This week, we’re diving right into the theming process, starting with the index page.
What I want you to do is:
- Open header.php and when needed edit the php code to fit your design (for now, don’t worry about dynamic headers and advanced stuff, we’ll get to that later)
- Work between your Photoshop mockup, header.php, your extend.css file (or whatever you chose to call it) and firebug to achieve the desired look.
- Move on to the index.php file:
- Try to inspect the html/css through Firebug to figure out what is php doing
- Try to design “the_loop” using css and php twicks when needed (you might want to add blueprint classes for your layout anyway)
- Last, design your footer.php along the same lines working on the header and index (if you got that far it should be pretty straight forward)
- Don’t feel obliged to get into the sidebars.php file yet, but if you need it for your layout, by all means, use it.
- If you’re running into problems use the W3C validator and if you want to run it by us, post code segments on the blog with lang=’php’ and/or lang=’css’ more instructions here.
On the OSD front we will decide in class (today) how to proceed on the WP Icons challenge. But nevertheless, by next week we should choose our OSD projects.
- Based on our discussion in class today, write a post further discussing what project you believe would be fit for y/our contribution.
- Try to mention some design challenges that you believe you/we can handle and solve in these projects so when we make our decision next week we have some concept of what we’re getting ourselves into.
Next week’s Great Wide Open will be by Khurry.
Be sure to vote before you get to class!
May the good guys win!
