Time to get your own web space + Next class

Hey class,

we will need to make sure you are more flexible with managing your own web space. Hence I would like you to get a hosting deal of your own by next week and post your files there using an FTP software.

  • Buy a domain name for yourself and a hosting space that supports PHP 4+5 and preferably also provides one-click install for WordPress. You are welcomed to do your own research and compare your results on the blog and through our del.icio.us tag OSD2. WordPress.org itself recommends a couple.
    * Personally, I can recommend Dreamhost which are a good bang for your buck (they host most of my sites, and I have yet not moved even though they had been having some flaky times last year). Anyway, I have arranged a serious discount for you if you register through this link and enter our promotion code: OSD
or by mentioning my email as a referrer
Disclaimer: it’s a win-win referrer program so I am benefiting from your discount too, but I made it as affordable as possible to you guys.
  • The links you post to your works should already be referring to the files hosted on your own sites.
  • If any of you have technical (or other) problems with this assignment, or want to consult me on anything, please email me.
(please don’t wait for the last moment with it)

The other thing I wanted to mention is that I want our next class to run in a workshop mode – meaning, you all come with your laptops (and as far as I understood from the first class, you indeed all got them) and we work on your html+css together in class. I will also make sure you all know how to upload your work to your own hosting space and how to use an FTP client. Please try to figure it all up yourself before class, but just so you know, I will make sure you are all on the same page by next week.

And the last thing, I keep forgetting that in class, but we should arrange a makeup class for the one you missed.
