MAMP and Wordpress: installing on your computer locally for easy testing
Hey guys, I did a bit of creative googling and found this site: Installing MAMP and Wordpress
Its obviously only for macs, so unfortunately this wont help you out susanna, but this is pretty quick and easy so if you want to get a local wordpress server setup this will do it. If this was covered during the workshop I wasn’t at this thursday then excuse my ignorance. the only thing that messed up with me was when you click on install near the end, I had to go back and manually edit the wp_config.php file because it had added localhost:8889:8889 instead of localhost:8889. I also changed the root directory to my Sites folder in my main user directory. Other than that it worked and its seriously MUCH easier to do it locally then upload the folder when the site is done. Hope this helps you guys.

BLOG ALMOST FINISHED - revision
I tried to use different typeface to change the “default”ness of the blog. I personally think it’s working a bit better. I also changed the font smaller and increase the line height so it becomes easier to read.

Alright so commentary on the wiki Current portal I really need to chow down on the discussions and look at what the current events is trying to be and see it as different from wikinews. I will do more research into how other users have suggested it be improved and check as to whether there are people currently working on the project already.
Brief: Reports from you OSD project + Mainpages
I want to start switching gears towards the final assignment. So each one of you should post about your progress with your OS project of choice:
- Sign up to the development mailinglist of the project
- Tell us who are the leading figures
- What are the leading issues
- Try to search for ‘design’ and ‘interface’ as a keyword in the discussion. What were the discussions around it, where did they lead? Are there already interface designers involved? How do proposals appear on the list? Is there a discussion? Do people meet in person?
- Is there a development blog? A forum? Where is the development taking place
- When you get to the step of introducing yourself / offering help, what do you think will be the best way to do that?
- Based on what you’ve learned so far and the feedback you got in class, what do you think can be your contribution to the project?
- Write all of these assessments in a post by Thursday, April 10th, 8pm.
I think we made some progress in the workshop yesterday and I want to be done with the main page by next week, so we need to still keep up the pace. Let’s break it down again:
By Tomorrow, April 5th, noon:
- Post a comment to your posts summing the feedback you got in class.
- Post at least three more comments to two of your fellow students.
By Tuesday, April 8th, noon:
- Submit a link to your blog with the header.php and footer.php index.php & sidebar.php implemented according to your design (in other words - the main page - ready) Like last week, with this link post a screenshot of the page too (it will be important for the documentation of your process)
By Wednesday, April 9th, noon:
- Post at least 4 comments to your fellow students on what they posted.
By Thursday, April 10th, 8pm:
- Post the link + screenshot of your main page, done. (by Friday next week your main page should be ready for critique as a WP theme).
And again, if you’re stuck, use the mailing list. If you learned a cool trick and want to share, use the mailing list. If somebody got stuck and you think you might be able to help, use the mailing list.

zp out of control
After losing half the code on my site by accident, I was absolutely devastated and fell into a fever. I just woke up and I installed a different theme that is more closely connected to my css design. The reason being I have no side bar and my format is totally different.
This is how far I got on my own and it looks a whole lot better than when I used the sandbox theme which was incompatible with my design. Still I think the person who authored this theme was sloppy somewhat and had lots of useless divs but I am not sure what to change and reorganize.
haven’t really gotten well yet but I will definitely be in class. sorry!

I have looked at many aspects of wikipedia including those that others have opened for games, drama tv series, and so on but I don’t want to depart so far away from the original creator’s use and Current Events is one of the things I feel could be vastly improved not only in design but hierarchy of information as well.
I know that there is also http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page
Wikinews has higher standards than other do it yourself news sites but I would rather not work on that project as it receives much less web traffic. Current events is a part of the main page as well as its own self contained project within wikipedia and I feel that it needs to have more structure and be different in organization because it is not about the encyclopedia, it is about news and thats why the site should reflect that information immediately. Right now it is a mass of day to day text spit out from top to bottom. Not very original. well see you all in class.

Hey guys. A little update here. I reworked it with what I feel to be a better design based mainly on Ryans feedback (because that was all i got). Anyway let me know what you guys think, preferably before class tomorrow.

my blog
so i tried to install the new wordpress and i must have done something completely wrong because i lost all of the additions i made to sandbox. i tried to reinstall the old wordpress, but alas, that didn’t work either. so here his my blog, but not as completely done as it was before. i’m still having problems making background images in my post, but that’s really the least of my worries! i’m still working on it tonight, so i hope i’m further along tomorrow.

This is what I have so far. I understand there are many adjustment issues I have to fix. This is the version without any roundcorners. Also I’m still working on putting an image in one of the posts.
