Hey yallz,
As Alexandra mentioned, she, Justin and I will be working to redesign elements of the music news site, NME (www.nme.com). Here are the two problem areas that I’ve identified:
1.) The Artist Search - NME promotes itself as a comprehensive weekly music news magazine, yet the website’s artist search page only features a list of current Top-40 bands, displacing every non-top 40 band on the planet to a much more poorly organized alternate page. I propose to remodel NME’s artists page along the lines of Rollingstone.com and Spin.com (to hugely successful music news magazines with equally successful websites)–providing a search bar and an A-Z search feature. This will greatly enhance the ease of searching.
2.) The Member Login section - again, I propose remodeling a section of NME.com along the lines of Rollingstone.com and Spin.com, who’s member login field is arranged horizontally along the main menu buttons. This seems like a much better use of space than NME’s current design which places the username and password fields stacked vertically to the far right of and below the menu buttons. This seems like a waste of space.

ViewFinder II: the Saga Continues
Hey all,
Here are my updated designs and wireframe. Having taken all comments in to consideration, I’ve made some minor interface adjustments, while instead focusing on the theoretical nature of how ViewFinder would actually work in an OS environment. Essentially, while I understand and appreciate the suggestion that I expand its functionality into gaming or other platforms, I decided that these types of full-on self-contained applications fall outside of the scope of what ViewFinder is supposed to do. Like Mushon had suggested in class, this is neither just a widget nor just an application, but rather somewhere in between–its a tool that allows you to control and manage the windows opened by programs like those in CS3, Office, etc, where the user has multiple workspaces open on a single desktop. By sticking to applications with multiple windows, I think the whole idea works better, because like Ariel posted from Apple, instead of building one widget that can do three things, why not build three widgets that each do one thing. I might be completely wrong here and am still open to the idea of expanding the functions. I guess we can discuss it in class.

My widget will allow the user to cycle between windows without cluttering their desktop. The ‘App Manager Widget’ will allow the user to have all of their open windows listed within the widget instead floating throughout their desktop. Instead of having to minimize multiple windows or using OSX’s expose feature to visually cycle between windows, the app manager widget would list the open application windows in a style similar to Firefox’s download manager, where an icon of the open application would be displayed next to the filename and options for either viewing or closing the window. The user can send a window to the app manager widget by simply minimizing the window. The app manager window will serve the purpose of clearing up the designer’s desktop when they are working with multiple applications and/or files.
