Hi, please

NMRS Wiki

Hey guys!  If you’ve been to the NMRS wiki recently (which you probably haven’t because let’s face it, it’s summer) you would’ve noticed that there were a lot of changes.  I’ve been going throught the wiki and systematically fixing and reorganizing a lot of the materials that you guys put up.  I remember one of the biggest problems we had discussed in class was that most people didn’t know how to use wiki formatting and as a result, a lot of our pages looked different.  Well, you guys were definitely right about that, so in response I’ve gone through each topic and author and organized the pages and fixed the links (YAY!).

Perhaps the hardest part throughout this whole process was learning the wiki formatting and ensuring that I kept it consistent throughout every page.  There were some pages that had so much information that it was pretty difficult to navigate through without the proper formatting.  For example, the page on journalism had so much information without any proper formatting.  I didn’t get a chance to explore the wiki the first time I worked on it for class, but now that I have, it was extremely apparent who put in effort and made attempts at using the proper formatting.  That being said, I am extremely grateful that Dylan had taken the initiative to create a basic layout for everyone to use.

After having read and re-read our posts and reflections on them in the wiki, I’m finally able to see how random subjects like Twitter can somehow connect to concerns such as human rights.  I suppose a lot of the things we discussed in class never really made that connection to me until now, when I’ve had the opportunity to look at what our class has discovered as a whole.  My hope for the wiki is that it has become more presentable and will hopefully more helpful to the future new media researchers.  Enjoy the rest of your summer everyone!

You guys,

i feel so empty inside not having any NMRS RSS feeds pop up in my mailbox.  I didn’t know this would be so hard…

Good luck, everyone, and have a great summer!

Regulating the Internet?

This was the question I kept asking myself since  it seemed like a lot of my (and those of others) travelogues dealt with the issue of regulating the internet and the role of freedom of speech in the internet. I found  a website I thought was interesting that lists court cases that dealt with Internet  Freedom of Speech.

I saw her comment on the talk page

I know it’s not completely finished, but still, what a good job we’ve done.

One last thing from me, I promise. The DISCUSSION tab. No one uses it? I saw Valerie said something about there being “too many cooks in the kitchen” (btw I like that phrase, I should use it more) so in response to her comments, I tidied up the Topic list.

Don’t panic, I did not delete your work, I just left the Main Page to have TITLE PAGE links. Like, “Arts” instead of all the stuff inside “Arts.” Coolios?

p.s. @patricia haha wikiSavior. i need one myself.

What are We Going to Do About the Internet

What are we going to do about the Internet page — it seems so obvious and that’s why I think everyone is avoiding it. Anyone have any bright ideas. I think we should either get kind of cheeky with it and say something on the page along the lines of “Duh.” or if we don’t do that then I think we get into the situation where we might have to be pretty detailed. Thoughts?

Wikiquestion

Hi Everyone,

As we continue in the wikiventure I have a question/suggestion about the structure on the main page. (That’s right… me… surprising I know). The Fourth Topic (#4) is called Topics in New Media. Does it not make a lot of sense or is it just incomplete?

Maybe we don’t need that.

Thoughts?

Also, I’m having trouble making the links to be able to edit my fansites and ebay pages under the technology subdivision. I’m sure I just did something wrong with the coding. Help?!

Networking and OLPC

This week we have been learning about networking as it relates to the One Laptop Per Child project. Let’s hear it straight from the horse’s mouth to start off with and talk about the Al Jazeera interview with Nicholas Negroponte:

Basically, in this interview we get a broad overview of the overarching goals of the One Laptop Per Child Project from inception to the product as finalized in 2007. After previewing in 2005, the project came widely under criticism both for lack of plausibilty as well as a widespread lack of sympathy for it’s mission: to provide cheap, durable, low power laptops to the most impoverished children in the world. Negroponte makes the point (which I didn’t consider but is totally true) children are “wired to learn” and that providing them with the basic tools to do so as well as a portal into oceans of material to learn from is a goal that is not just worthy or our attention but necessary for the world’s poor.

The calls and written questions fielded by Negroponte covered the gamut of the public’s concerns and skepticism about the project, for example the first call hit the debate dead on when they asked: why are we buying laptops for people who really need food and clean water?

Wikiwonderful Update

Now that we’ve all had a chance to write all over the nice clean walls of our wiki like so many zealous 5-year-olds with crayons I thought we might take a step back and see how our masterpiece is progressing.

Despite the fact that we’re all newbies at this whole thing I think we should be proud of ourselves so far. But, there’s definitely more to be done, and if we all put in a bit more work we’ll have something to be really proud of by Tuesday. So I’ve been cruising around the site and I’ve put together a list of things that everyone can do to improve the overall presentation and substance of the wiki.
