I really thought the discussion of freedom was particularly interesting, especially in light of events in recent months. The clip described the transition of freedom from something that was once so predictable to something more challenging and complex. After comparing the “old” freedom to something out of a face in a poker game, The Trap elaborated into discussions of the “thud project”. While the movie completely repeats the results in different forms, it brings to light what the definition of freedom is.
This idea of freedom is so defined by the Western culture. Under the past administration, we tried to force this idea of freedom into under developed nations with little success. It jus showed how subjective the idea of freedom truly is. It is not something that one nation can collectively define in one concrete idea. Freedom is a collection of different definitions unique to ones personal beliefs, thus in the “thud project” it was almost impossible for the people to gain freedom from their hospitalization for their apparent schizophrenia.
In regards to recent events, freedom has never been harder to define in my honest opinion. As the country enters unchartered waters with a bi-racial president, the poker face as discussed become a little harder to read. As happens with all things, when change comes- both positive and negative- it often takes some period of adjustment. As demonstrated in the clips from the second segment, the majority of the people supported Clinton’s initiatives for change from the old Bush, yet also embraced the change from the Clinton administration to the younger Bush. As new forms of news and media spread word of these changes, it will be easier for freedom to be expressed by the unique individual rather than an idea of what freedom means to the whole.

I am in complete agreement with the notion that freedom is not so easily defined. Because of recent events the word freedom has been thrown around in many different ways. It has been used as a strategy to win an election, it has been used as an excuse for war, it has been used as a justification of wrongdoings, etc. I believe that it has been exploited to the point where it has now generated confusion amongst people to what it really means. In my opinion freedom is abstract. Freedom is something different for everyone and is very embedded in each person’s culture. That is why politics cannot be driven by Western ideas of freedom because in the end it is not the same.
