Stalking: A New Option- Conclusion

So after digesting the responses that I got on my last post I did some thinking and researching about why we CARE so much about the idea of CELEBRITY.  I think the answer (to most people) is the notion that celebrities are always cool and part of the “in crowd”.  I think, as much as we all might say its not true, that we all have the desire to be part of the popular crowd.  We might have made decisions on friendships later in life to be different from the “in crowd” but I think is based on our early development.

I also think that the popularity of celebrity predates a lot of this modern and new forms of media.  It is not something that can be defined by a few simple studies.  We are still infatuated by the idea and fashion of Marilyn Monroe.  Her pictures are still extremely popular and she is an iconic image.  I think that the iconic stars as well as the huge names today are successful not only because they create this iconic and starlike image while they are alive, but also because they are relatable.  I have mentioned this in every post and class- but the stars that are so far beyond the common person, never last.

While in the end of this travelogue, I am not sure that I think the idea behind gawker stalker is the best idea- but for now, I do not see any glaring issues with it.  Yes, it is a little creepy.  Yes, it is a little too stalkeresque.  But what is media.  Media has created this stalker-like persona in all of us.  When we look at facebook- we are able to see what bars our friends frequent, who they were kissing the night before, who they are dating.  So what is different.  Just that we are not friends with them suddenly makes is “uncool” for us know where celebs go.
