The music path (while traveling on the fourth road)

YouTube Preview ImageSo I told you that I would conclude my 4th journey via creating an own college chat forum: still working on that!
While I was reading my daily newspaper though, I stumbled over an article by Ben Greenman. He reported about the singer song writer Jill Sobule and her own “unique” way of beating the downfall of the old music business. You might not be so familiar with her music, but just as a little side fact, she wrote the song “I Kissed a Gril” in 1995!…mmmh so you weren’t the first Katy!

So Jill gets her money for her new album “California Years,” in a slightly different way than common:
The album was funded by listener anticipation. On her Web site the singer asked her fans to contribute to her project and she raised way over her goal, which was 75 000 $.
The way of funding was tiered: For ten bucks you can download the entire album, for 100$ you will get a hardcopy of the CD with your name as “Junior Executive ProducerT-Shirt,” and a mention in the notes on the back; for 500$ your name will even get mentioned in one of Jill’s songs!

WOW! Now how far did this lady go?
The climax is that for 10 000 dollars a fan was able to sing on the album.
She certainly succeeded!Heres cheers to you Miss Sobule:

Some Extra Interesting things I found online

Pay Attention

I was really impressed the first 5 minutes afterwards I was a bit more critical about the text messaging part. What do you guys think? Do you think teachers in school should be more like Mushon? That they should offer and work with more urls..and online technology or do you think this would turn into too much of playing around than actually grasping?

Oh my g** it’s Omegle

OK. I’ve been thinking about blogging about TOKIO HOTEL’s fan sites.. blog sites, myspace, youtube sites and comparing the responses of the writers and fans to a live audience at concerts. I think it’s pretty interesting how freaky some audiences are getting today. With this band having a pretty young audience, where there is a lot of honest response coming from them online, I would’ve loved to compare the life reaction to the online one.  If you want to have an idea of how scary they are check this out: YouTube Preview Image

But apparently it’s not really what I should do. It’s not enough or too much to compare. So I started my research out new. And look what I found:

People! Check this out: omegle.com. It’s a new form of chat forum where you talk to or chat with, the strangest strangers.. A student from Canada invented this and people seem to like it a lot.

The pros: you can go online and talk about your life, problems, issues, happy times, ask people questions, exchange ideas, and so on…. with a stranger and aren’t committed to anything or anyone. You can go online and have a sort of social life and always find someone  interesting and often are even exchanging ideas internationally wide.

Cons: You never know if the person talking to you is sincere or not. If the conversation you started will stop any second. You can start a conversation which is really lame and end up talking to a 13 year old kid who can’t spell or doesn’t speak English at all.

I will see if I can find more online sites like that. And would like to compare them. I’m a bit scared that I already explored too much of this site though? What do you think?Do you guys know this or anything similar?

If not and just to get an idea, go online and chat. Or look at the  youtube clip I added, about the strangest chats you can have..

Another thing that would really interest me are living room concerts. I know that a lot of bands especially now are starting with “online concerts” from their living rooms ( like the singer Sandi Thom did in 2006). They make them accessible to the public and often get a lot of response. Sandi Thom signed with RCA soon after her online living room debut. So what do you think about that? Do you know any other cases? Believe in their success?

4th Start.

I’m still at the start and sort of stuck..I’m thinking about following a band and reporting about their audience reactions at live concerts and comparing them to the  reactions online. I want to find out if the youtube comments are based on FANS. I would like to research about Stalkers, Fans and obsessors of this band. I would also want to learn more about the online Hooligans. I’d also like to know whether promoters or managers actually comment on youtube.. but I guess that will be really hard. Maybe I will have to make some phone calls and ask some “insiders”. Lets see.

Film on the Fly-Travelogue 3

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for an experiment from a communication group started by a woman called Janet English, called FILM ON THE FLY.

Once a month this group has a competition where they rate each others short films online. You can be living all over the world, as long as your phone works you are in.

How does it work?

The film topic is being sent to the participators (and anyone can take part) via text message. Previous topic had to do with “A message from a BOX”. With only receiving little information the competitors start their filming.

The agenda is to film a fun movie within 20 hours, with the use of your cell phone camera.

The popularity of using cell phones as a camera or as a recording device is getting more popular every day. People are even functioning as paparazzi or news reporters and send their photo-camera-shots to television stations.

It was around 12 pm on the 14th of March, when I received a text message saying: “Show how Pi determines the circumference or diameter of a pizza, carousel, Ferris Wheel or any circle near you.”

Suddenly I was back in math class and thought I ended up with a science group. But that is how these agenda apparently vary. It was the day of Pi so Janet wanted us to film about Pi. Within the next hours that I had light in NYC I was searching for some round subject to measure the Pi from and somehow make it fun for me and the viewers (who would rate my experiment later on).

I live on the Upper West Side right near Central Park and walked around that area with a friend. “Imagine, Ethram what would you like to learn about or see as a viewer….”

Think Think Think

I ended up filming a lot of things: A donut, Columbus Circle, a trash bin, and finally ended up measuring John Lennon’s Memorial near Strawberry Fields.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t film too long and I kept on cutting off at the end because I ran out of “film(ing time)”.

MY RESULT:     one    and   a    half stars rated by my viewers.

There were kids who just had better ideas and a better camera, or who just new how to film in a way that didn’t cut off….

Well, to be honest, I think a lot of people competing were cutting and dubbing around with their films and also used different cameras and not only their film camera.  They did a great job and I was so impressed.

Most important for me: It was fun to use my phone differently and I learned that in America you pronounce Pi not

with an “eee” at the end.

Reading Summary: Open Sourced

Reading Summary: Open Sourced

In light of reading about the tremendous potential of open sourcing information and decentralized human capital, Ethram and Dylan have decided to “open source” our reading assignment. Although we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, we decided to not write “traditional” blog posts, but to summarize the readings using an open source format. We worked together, although physically separately to collectively edit the summary for the week. In recognition that our work can always be better and in the spirit of open source software, we encourage you to not only read the summaries, but add or subtract where you see fit.

This is still a work in progress as far as our understanding of how this works, so please let me know if the links are working and if you have permission to edit the page. I believe you may need to send us your e-mail for us to allow permission. To do that contact us at McP1ckl3s@gmail.com

Film on the Runnnnn

OK. So people, I got to tell you I am so excited. I finally found something! I just hope this works.

First of all: Wish me luck.

I am competing online. And this is what it’s all about:    People use their phone for all kinds of things. Sure for talking. Working online, loooooping, texting, chatting, to check themselves out on the screen. Some even use it as an accessory, but what most of us do next to talking , is taking a quick picture with our cell phones. I’m going one step further and am filming!

I found some very interesting website which made me start to run around with my sister’s phone taking pictures and videos preparing myself for the big day:  March the 7th. I will be exposed on youtube with my own creative video!

I found this online event called “Film on the Fly” :

It’s one of the latest mobile filmmaking competitions. People are getting text messages sent to their mobile phones. They get a specific topic and within 20 hours the phone user has to shoot a short film with their cellphone-camera and post it on youtube.
