A couple of weeks ago I signed up for an experiment from a communication group started by a woman called Janet English, called FILM ON THE FLY.
Once a month this group has a competition where they rate each others short films online. You can be living all over the world, as long as your phone works you are in.
How does it work?
The film topic is being sent to the participators (and anyone can take part) via text message. Previous topic had to do with “A message from a BOX”. With only receiving little information the competitors start their filming.
The agenda is to film a fun movie within 20 hours, with the use of your cell phone camera.
The popularity of using cell phones as a camera or as a recording device is getting more popular every day. People are even functioning as paparazzi or news reporters and send their photo-camera-shots to television stations.
It was around 12 pm on the 14th of March, when I received a text message saying: “Show how Pi determines the circumference or diameter of a pizza, carousel, Ferris Wheel or any circle near you.”
Suddenly I was back in math class and thought I ended up with a science group. But that is how these agenda apparently vary. It was the day of Pi so Janet wanted us to film about Pi. Within the next hours that I had light in NYC I was searching for some round subject to measure the Pi from and somehow make it fun for me and the viewers (who would rate my experiment later on).
I live on the Upper West Side right near Central Park and walked around that area with a friend. “Imagine, Ethram what would you like to learn about or see as a viewer….”
Think Think Think
I ended up filming a lot of things: A donut, Columbus Circle, a trash bin, and finally ended up measuring John Lennon’s Memorial near Strawberry Fields.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t film too long and I kept on cutting off at the end because I ran out of “film(ing time)”.
MY RESULT: one and a half stars rated by my viewers.
There were kids who just had better ideas and a better camera, or who just new how to film in a way that didn’t cut off….
Well, to be honest, I think a lot of people competing were cutting and dubbing around with their films and also used different cameras and not only their film camera. They did a great job and I was so impressed.
Most important for me: It was fun to use my phone differently and I learned that in America you pronounce Pi not
with an “eee” at the end.
